We all love a good slice of challah
Eat it plain, slather it with chummus, schug, techina or matbucha
It doesn’t matter – its not going to be around long.
Challah often gets a bad rep,
But is it really that bad?
The answer is yes...
And no.
Let me break it down…
In one slice of challah there is roughly 20 grams of carbs
You can consume 4,5 maybe even 6 slices of challah during the first course.
That’s 120 grams of carbs!
Then out comes the chicken soup, followed by (hopefully) some hot veg
That brings the carb count up to 140 grams.
Then there’s dessert
Let’s call that 3 scoops of ice-cream
That's roughly 170 grams of carbs in one Shabbos meal
An excess of over 100 grams of carbs!
The body has no use for excess carbs so it stores it as fat.
It’s not that challah is inherently bad for you
But rather it’s a case of the dose making the poison.
